Multiple-meaning words, Identifying the Main Idea and Supporting Details, and Context Clues
Main Idea: most important ideas, information, or facts about a topic or a story
Supporting Details: smaller pieces of information that support the main idea of the story
-Making a main idea and supporting details chart based on text
LAL Vocabulary:
Fierce: something is very strong on violent
- Sentence: The fierce wind blew the tree down.
Whips: when something moves or hits quickly or suddenly
- Sentence: During a tornado, the wind whips around and around.
Echoes: when you make a noise and the sound is repeated
- Sentence: My voice echoes in the cave.
Shuffles: to walk without lifting your feet off the ground
- Sentence: My little brother shuffles when he puts on Dad's shoes.
Huddle: a group of animals or people that is close together
- Sentence: The football players formed a huddle to decide on their next play.
Junior: the younger or smaller
- Sentence: There were two grown seals and one junior seal at the zoo.
Down: the fine, soft feathers on a bird; to go from higher to a lower place
- Sentence: Down helps protect birds from the cold.

Story Elements
-Identifying the characters, setting, and the plot of the story
-Making a story map graphic organizer
Story Elements Include:
-Characters: the people and animals in a story, and their actions move the plot along
-Setting: when and where the story takes place (The setting can change throughout a story)
-Plot: is made up of the events in a story that includes the most important part of the beginning, middle, and end of a story
Character Traits
-parts of a character's personality. These can be good or bad: responsible, creative, greedy, or jealous. (Other examples can be found on the sheet in your child's binder.)
Context Clues
-Using clues within a sentence to define an unknown word.
LAL Vocabulary:
crackle: make a series of small, sharp snapping noises
announced: told something in a loud or official way
soared: flew high in the air
starry: full of many stars
envelope: a flat paper container, often used for sending letters through the mail
photograph: a picture made with a camera

Story Elements Include:
-Characters: the people and animals in a story, and their actions move the plot along

-Compound words: a word made of two smaller words
Example: down + stairs = downstairs
LAL Vocabulary:
Downstairs: "down the stairs"
- Sentence: The girl walked downstairs to get the mail.
Nervous: when person is afraid or worried
- Sentence: I feel nervous when I ride on an airplane.
Chuckled: laughing quietly when a something is funny
- Sentence: I chuckled when I heard the joke.
Nonsense: a silly or untrue idea or thought
- Sentence: I was afraid to go to the library. My friend said my fears were nonsense.
Fumbled: when something is done in a clumsy way
- Sentence: He was tired and fumbled into his pajamas.
Trudged: a way of walking slowly or dragging one's feet
- Sentence: The tired student trudged up the hill to his house.
