Note: Except for drums, no audition is required for participation in our Instrumental Band Program which begins in 5th grade. All fifth graders are welcome to join the band in 5th grade to learn to play an instrument and gain experience playing in a performing ensemble. Almost 50% of the entire 5th grade participate in the Instrumental band Program!Fifth Grade BandIn September a group of professional musicians are brought in to perform an assembly for the entire 5th Grade to demonstrate the band instruments. Included are the Flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, as well as drums and percussion. There are try-outs for participation in the Drums/percussion section prior to registration. No prior experience necessary.Interested children choose a first and second choice of instrument, and then are registered to play. Those who try out for drums and are not selected to play drums may still join band and study their second choice of instrument chosen on the registration forms that will be provided to all 5th graders in September.Band members begin by meeting once weekly, all year, in a small group instrumental lesson with Mr. Stocker which takes place during school in place of another class. It is the student’s responsibility to make up any work missed while at the weekly lesson. Our teachers are very supportive of our instrumentalists and work with every band member to ensure success is achieved both in learning their instrument, and making up any missed work. After Thanksgiving all 5th grade band members will begin meeting all together after-school twice weekly in addition to their instrumental lesson, in one group called band class (Currently Mondays and Thursdays 3:20-4:00 on full school days) in preparation to perform at the annual Spring Concert in June. The 5th grade band members as second year players form the 6th Grade Band next year, and prepare for performances in both Winter and Spring.Sixth Grade BandUpon promotion from 5th to 6th grade, the former 5th grade band members as second year players, form the 6th Grade Band and prepare for performances in both Winter and Spring. Students who have no playing experience may join the sixth grade band by first arranging private instrumental music instruction in an effort to bring their development on their instrument in line to the same level of ability as the second year players which make up the 6th Grade Band.Band members participate all year in a weekly small group instrumental lesson which takes place during another class. It is the student’s responsibility to make up any work missed. Our teachers are very supportive of our instrumentalists and work with every band member to ensure success is achieved both in learning their instrument, and making up any missed work.In addition to the weekly Instrumental Lesson, the band members meet altogether as a group called Band Class, twice weekly.
