LITERACY
The Journeys Reading Series is the instructional resource used for Literacy. Along with this reading series, we will use a variety of instructional resources such as Raz-Kids, Epic, and Teachers Pay Teachers resources to implement instruction within the classroom. We also use Fountas and Pinnell, AimsWeb, and LinkIt for benchmark testing to assess student's growth and progress throughout the year. We will also be completing two novel studies this year: Shiloh and Riding Freedom.
MATH
The GoMath Series is the instructional resource used for Math. Each chapter consists of one mid-chapter quiz and a chapter test at the end of the chapter. Students are introduced to a variety of methods to learn specific skills and will complete a chapter review before the chapter test. Students are expected to come to 4th grade with their basic multiplication and division facts memorized. Students will be introduced to many new concepts, such as: multi-digit by 1-digit multiplication, 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication, long division, fractions and decimals, factors and multiples, geometry, and area and perimeter.
WRITING
The Schoolwide Writing Program is used to build the students' foundational writing skills. Our program is broken down into four units: How Writers Work (Narrative), Nonfiction/Informative, Opinion/Editorial, and an Author Study on Cynthia Rylant (Narrative). Students will utilize graphic organizers during the writing process and have the opportunity to revise and edit their writing pieces. After each unit, a portfolio will go home with the student's writing pieces in them. You may take a look at them as a family, then please sign and return the pieces to school. Each unit will consist of an on demand and process writing piece.
SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES
Topics for Social Studies are introduced and taught by using the Grade 3 Young Citizens curriculum. Topics taught and introduced for Science are used with The Next Generation Science Standards. Science materials are presented through many different resources. Some topics are introduced using Grade 3 Scott Foresman textbook for Science, interactive Smartboard slides, video clips, and hands-on activities.
